The Orthodox Temple
"Most Holy Mother of God "
This beautiful church is located in Zemplínska Široká, district Michalovce, Košice region, Slovakia. It is is protected as a national cultural monument by the Monument Office of the Slovak Republic.
It has been built in 1929 - 1930 (1934), according to the model of Old Russian Renaissance-Baroque architecture.
The temple, which was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is built in the Old Russian style with neo-baroque architectural elements. It is not known who is the author of the project. Although the temple has undergone several modifications to its exterior and interior, its current state reflects its authentic appearance. The temple's furnishings include a four-row iconostasis made in the 1920s, typical of the Byzantine-Carpathian Christian tradition. Its author is the iconographer Jeromonas Josif (Popovich) from the Izhsky monastery (Transcarpathian region, Ukraine). The temple is also decorated with frescoes with biblical scenes from the late 1930s, which are the work of the academic painter, nun Jana Raitlinger.
